Volunteers Wanted

The IRM Outreach Program is seeking volunteers for three opportunities.

BioEYES High School Interns: “Meet a Scientist!”

BioEYES hosts 2 high school interns every Wednesday afternoon from February-April, 2-4 pm.   Interns learn about our zebrafish, assist in the fish facility, complete administrative tasks, and meet researchers.  We are always looking for new graduate students/post-docs for them to meet!  Typically, we schedule meetings for a 30 min- 1 hr block.  The graduate student/post-doc should be prepared to talk with the students and show them something or demonstrate something (ex. show students a piece of lab equipment and how it works, let students look through the microscope, have students try something).  The interns are always interested in hearing about graduate school in general, too, and how you got to where you are.

Deadline: March 30, 2020. If interested, please email Tracy Nelson, tracyn@pennmedicine.upenn.edu

BioEYES Classroom Volunteer

Our BioEYES zebrafish lab is a one-week classroom experience for grades K-12.  Each week our 3 Outreach Educators visit different Philadelphia city and suburban schools to deliver the program.  We always welcome volunteers who want to assist us in the classroom!

Days: Mondays, Tuesdays, & Fridays

Time: varies depending on the school/grade

High School Summer Researchers – Science and Career Series

From June 22 – July 31st, 15 local high school students will spend 6 weeks in IRM affiliated laboratories and take part in a weekly series focused on science as a career. We are recruiting Penn staff, students and post-docs to present their work (in a simple way), create a demo, and discuss their own journey into science at one of these 1-hour seminars.  Additional topics that can be discussed (but not limited to): the role of a good mentor; how to create a network; how to ask questions; where to look for good science information; and how to best prepare for a STEM undergraduate major.  Group presentations are also encouraged! The goal of this seminar is to help students understand that there is no “one size fits all” in both your research and career path.

Deadline: June 01, 2020. If interested, please email Dr. Jamie Shuda, jshuda@sas.upenn.edu
